ELECTRIC HOT WATER SYSTEM PHASE OUT

Why is it so important for Electric Hot Water Systems to be Phased Out?

On Average, Electric Hot Water systems are one of the single largest energy intensive emission emitter than any other household appliance. Some electric hot water systems are capable of producing  around four tones of greenhouse gas emmissions every year. That’s almost as much as running a small sized car for a year.

The Federal Government is working with the Queensland government to phase out electric hot water systems. Stage 1 of the process commenced at the beginning of last year. Stage 1 involved the banning of Electric hot water systems for installation in:

  • Any new home or townhouse.
  • Any Existing detached Townhouse or Terrace where they have access to natural gas, except where an exemption applies.

There is talk of the total banning of electric hot water systems for those who live in or outside a gas reticulated area. 2012 should see the total banning of Electric Hot water Systems for any Terrace, Townhouse or existing detached dwelling. However, at this stage, owners of homes who are located outside of a gas reticulated natural gas area will still be able to replace their existing electric hot water systems with another electric hot water system.
